WAVESAILING’S HIGH PERFORMANCE TRIBAL GATHERING

Between the 1st and the 8th of February 2003, fifteen stout Comrades gathered about the Mad Mantis to trial a revolutionary new wavesailing contest format. The location for this tribal gathering was Marrawah on the west coast of Tasmania- a part of Australia that is blessed with copious amounts of wind and swell.

Huey, the god who presides over these elements produced them only in small amounts at the start of the week, testing our patience and demanding liver Sacrifice. Once satisfied that we were dedicated to the cause, Huey caused wind and swell to flow forth from the heavens, which delighted the Smackfest Comrades as they gleefully tested the Smackfest Format.

This Format, designed to advance sporting excellence only counts competitors’ one highest scoring Jump and one highest scoring Smack- and the contest is only held if the waves are
around mast high (4 metre faces) or bigger.

There was hooting and hollering, plenty of smacks, big airs and crashes. From pro to novice it seemed that the new format made everybody push themselves a lot harder in search of the Wavesailing Shan grila.

The Mad Mantis’ suspicions had proven correct…
….SMACKFEST IS THE FUTURE OF WAVESAILING
