This part of the Island is more dry than the west coast and the mountain range. And as a result of this years extreme drought we were facing again big bushfires that were burning around Hobart and in the area of New Norfolk - the gate way to Hobart. But not only that we have been here for the first time, we also brought the rain with us. At least the fires got under control and we could enter the urbanity to go sightseeing.

Hobart

Clockwise: Big Surfshops, Inner city, harbour

Famous through the yachting race Sydney - Hobart this city like the rest of the island is rather unknown to the european traveller. But it has it all. Beautiful scenery, old sandstone houses (dating back to the early 1800s), markets, groovy clubs, great eatery lovely beaches and - some worldclass surfspots within 20minutes drive. We took the chance and visited an uncle of mine who came over to Tasmania 15 years ago and stayed for the love towards this island. He showed us around and we got a good impression and understand why he did not want to go back to Europe.
