After two days we had to leave Hobart and spend another day driving up the east coast which can catch good waves but is not that consistent then the west coast. So guess what we did not find: waves. But it is always worth a visit. The road along the coast changes between sealed, gravel and pothole dirt road but follows the bays and beaches so that you can check out the wave just driving along the spots.
We had another camp at Friendly Beaches, did a 2 hours hike to Wineglass Bay, a kind of pirate treasure beach sheltered by bold, granite mountains and green bush. The next day we were heading for Marrawah - the promised land. Passing Launceston, the second major city of the island we arrived at the very north western tip at 6:00pm. Marrawah is the mecca for soul surfers and wave sailors. My Surfguide quotes: The waves can look magical, but be warned... the sheer power will ingloriously strip you any pride, or if you are lucky, reward you handsomely. There is no hype here. Just empty lines and clear power on a rugged coastline rich with options. Access becomes increasingly difficult as you head south." Most of the spots you will never find without local knowledge and a 4x4 vehicle.

The EVENT

Marrawah would be the basis for the next 8 days and soon after we entered the area we found the only pub for miles where about 15 vans and 4x4 fully loaded with windsurfing gear were parked. On the porch the competitors of the Australian nationals (which took place the last couple of days) started to get drunk. So we did. During the night we got introduced to all the locals and the smackfest competitors and Quentin officially held the SF Opening. What followed was a hard party night. The local band Whalebone rocked the crowd and they will also provide some tracks for the event DVD-Video. The next morning - in a way we made it to Quentins' house - everybody had quite a hangover. And the good thing about it was that everybody has been introduced pretty well to each other so that some of us were already sharing little secrets. There is some rumors about Colin Ivory and local girls going around...
