Wind, Waves, Competition!! Finally we got em all. Well it
still was not the heavy conditions that we wanted for Smackfest
but we were able to run a complete set of heats and at the end
of the day we had a Smackfest Challenge with a winner and everything.
Contest Day (As told by contest organiser, Quentin Bye):

The SF Competitors...

... in their heats...

... going off.

"Ahh, contest day. Thursday night I was pondering
my earlier decisions to hold the contest off for some better conditions-
only two days left of Smackfest and we still havent run
the event yet. It was sacrifice night. Everybody knows that the
best way to get going-off wavesailing conditions is to get smashed.
We partied till the early hours and by the time that we had bacon
and eggs, the cloud was clearing away and yes, there was some
swell! At 11AM the wind kicked in and I knew that this was the
day.
Most of the competitors had a good warmup in the
3/4 to mast high waves by the time that the heats started.
It was a dream to see the new format in action. With only the
one best jump and one best re-entry (smack) on wave counted per
heat, it freed competitors to charge the lip and be more experimental
than what occurs in existing formats. The atmosphere on the beach
and on the water was unreal. Every one was screaming 'SMACK IT'
when one of the competitors was lining up a lip.

James: "Smack It!"
The wind and swell kicked slightly for the three man final. The
finalists were; James Atkinson (Launceston, Australia) Peter Volwater
(Pumerend, The Netherlands) and Quentin Bye (Newcastle, Australia).
The lads had 20 minutes to get the best jump and smack and take
out the 2003 Smackfest Challenge.

There was some big hits, big drillings and big jumps. The three
finalists were hooting each other into some sick bombs. There
were plenty of waves to go round and all three came in stoked,
after having one the best sails of their lives."
